Brazil Fortaleza Holiday North-East Brazil Coast

North East Brazil

Fortaleza in Ceara Province

Fortaleza means Fortress in Portuguese. The Dutch held this Coast in 1649 building the fort called Schoonenborch. The Portuguese recaptured it naming it Fortaleza.

Fortaleza is known as the "blonde bride of the sun" with reason. It is close to the Equator and has more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Brazil. Both North-east and South-west magnificent beaches stretch for miles. The new airport gives easy access via Lisbon from northern Europe.

Brazilians are relaxed and welcoming and love music and partying. The local music, known as Forro, a Portuguese and African mix can be heard everywhere in bars, restaurants, night clubs and on the beach. It is played on accordion and tambourin often with a song of mournful negro slave lament.

This has become the most popular beach resort region for Brazilians from the big cities of the South thanks to its modern airport, good roads and developed tourist bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Fortaleza has several superior hotels, built along the beach promenade and also resort hotels on both sides of the city.Salvador, well to the south, has the beautiful resort of Praia do Forte
