Horse on the river bank

Canoa Resort Information

Canoa Quebrada is 95 miles to the south-east of Fortaleza. It is a small town, with restaurants , bars and cafes. It can be reached by bus or taxi from Fortaleza in a couple of hours. Far less developed than the beach resorts closer to Fortaleza, it does not yet have any large hotels. It is possible to ride horses or drive dune buggies along the beach. You can also sail in jangadas or kite-surf.

There are two small guest houses or Pousadas at Canoa the Long Beach and the new Aruana, which has only 12 individual thatched lodges, rather like jungle huts. It has a large swimming pool and is about 500m from the beach.

P from London notes changes taking place,

"Today, like almost every other city in the world, after my last visit things have changed. There are still rustic bars on deserted sandy beaches, places where you can kick back and pretend that the bar man is actually 'Man Friday' and where you can throw your hammock between two trees and watch the sun set over the peaceful Atlantic ocean whilst sipping a cocktail, but there are also more modern bars. The old and the new, modern and traditional coexist easily. Alongside the vibrant nightspots it is still possible to see the beauty which attracted Orson Wells to film scenes of his movie "It's All True" on the coast's sundrenched shores."

A from New Jersey liked the nightlife especially

"Broadway is the main street where it all happens. Bar Todo Mundo is for tourists and plays music mostly blues and rock until sunrise. Cabana has good local meals and the Coffee Shop, which is open late has a lot of different types of coffee and sandwiches.Night clunbs Pocoloco and Eu Quero e Mais, play Axe and Forro. Forro is like square dancing but Axe is a bit more twisting and very sexy. Restaurante Artesanal in front of the Hotel Tranquilandia. serves good fish."

H from Miami likes the laid back feel.

" We drove further southeast along the coast. The immense pink dunes overlook broad beaches not far from Aracati on a shimmering Atlantic coast. Although small, the village has plenty of lively restaurants, bars as well as nightclubs where patrons dance to the rhythm of the Forros In the 1970s, It was discovered by Brazilian drop outs looking for a more laid-back lifestyle. The town has developed somewhat, but it's still a magical event to watch the sun set over the dunes, which resemble a lunar landscape."
