Jangada on the beach

Cumbuco Resort Information

Cumbuco is 25 miles north-west of Fortaleza and generally quieter and more peaceful than the beaches out to the south-east. It was a small fishing village lying between the beach and lagoons. The beach has sand dunes shaded by banana and coconut plantantions and clumps of palms. The winds are stronger here and it is an ideal spot for wind and kite surfing. Many f the national teams come here out of season. There are tracks for pony trekking, donkey rides and dune buggy driving.

There is always a good breeze on the beach, keeping mosquitoes at bay and keeping the climate temperate. Wild horses drink at the lakes and eagles soar above. A 27-hole golf resort is planned nearby.

The Hotel Dolphin is the best here and it is the best value resort hotel near Fortaleza.

P from London notes the changes

" Two years later Cumbuco was still as beautiful, the beach still made me hold my breath - as if breathing would shatter the illusion of blue surf and white sand. But progress was obvious. On the dunes the locals were practising the national Cearan pastime of 'esquidunda'. They assured me it was easy, simply climb to the top of the dunes with a plank of wood and than slide down to the bottom - which should preferably end in a lagoon. I believed them, but the lure of an ice cold beer was too much and I retired to a shady bar for a beer. "

J,K and K from California were there for the kitesurfing

"We arrived to Cumbuco at 4.30 a.m. The staff was super nice and waited to pick us up at the airport since we had a problem - my 10M kite got shredded by the airport carrier. Two of us kited in front of the hotel which has smaller waves and is choppy, with slightly side on shore wind. The third did an upwinder with an instructor to the Icarai lagoon which took about 40 minutes for a 3 miles beat. The coast bends so and the wind is more onshore and the waves are bigger with lots of room on the inside for kickers and waves to jump and ride. Sweet area, nice waves on one side, butter smooth on the other and a little bar/ restaurant about 200 yards east of the Icarai Lagoon. I am drinking Caiprinha as I write whilst the others talk kites.

About 10 km upwind from the hotel, the waves are and the little Icarai lagoon can take 5 kiters. We had a nice lunch and went North to look for Caiupe Lagoon. We got lost half way and it was getting late so we kited for another hour before sunset. Dinner at Jardim Cumbuco, a great restaurant with a German and Brazilian chef. It is at the back of a private house with great food, service, and ambience, about a 2 minute drive from the hotel. Very Highly Recommended.

Port Pecem is a few miles north of Caiupe Lagoon. What a great spot with extremely nice right hand point break waves with slightly offshore wind. You could easily do 4 bottom turns on each wave. This is so far the best waves riding the spot that we have been on this trip. Dinner at the hotel Bacalhau -Portugese style. sauteed onion, garlic, tomato, olive oil, bay leave, white wine until the tomato and onion soften and then dumped over fish and potato cubes and baked, slowly.

Best kiting months are August until December, you can kite every day with 10, 12 or 14m² kites.. January and February have less wind and. February to April is the rainy season with Force 3 rising to Force 5 by June, so do not forget to bring a 16 or an 18m² kite if you rearly in the year."
